If you’re a parent scrolling through social media, it can feel like “sleep training” is a non-negotiable milestone you must complete. The message is loud and clear: if your child isn’t sleeping through the night by a certain age, you’re doing something wrong.

We’re here to tell you a different story. A more honest, more peaceful one.

At Upchild, we don’t believe every family needs formal sleep training.

Why? Because every family, every child, and every parenting philosophy is beautifully unique. Your sleep goals should be a reflection of your family’s values and needs, not a prescription from a book.

Let us prove it with our own experience: Out of our three children, only one needed what you would call classic “sleep training” – the one who was heavily dependent on the latch throughout the night. One was a natural sleep angel from the start. The third just needed a little “habit reshaping” – a few gentle tweaks to their routine to get things on track.

Sleep support isn’t a binary choice between “cry-it-out” and “total exhaustion.” It’s a spectrum.

The Foundation: Navigating the 4th Trimester

Before we even talk about “training,” let’s talk about the foundation. The first three months of your baby’s life – often called the 4th Trimester – are a period of immense development and adjustment for both of you.

Research highlights that newborn sleep is inherently disorganised. In these early months, a baby’s primary need is for comfort, connection, and responsiveness from their caregivers. Their tiny stomachs need frequent filling, and their nervous systems are learning to regulate outside the womb. They don’t produce melatonin on a stable 24-hour cycle until they are several months old. Their sleep cycles are also shorter (about 45 – 60 minutes compared to an adult’s 90 minutes) and they spend much more time in active sleep (similar to REM sleep), which is a lighter, more easily disturbed sleep stage. This “disorganisation” is a normal, adaptive feature for a newborn, not a problem to be solved.

So, what should you do? Focus on building a secure attachment, learning your baby’s sleepy cues, and surviving while embracing the cuddles. Our calm heartbeat, warm touch, and soothing voice help a baby’s immature system calm down from a state of stress (crying) to a state of calm. Over time, through thousands of these positive interactions, their own nervous system learns to self-regulate. This period is about bonding, not schedules. Formal “sleep training” may go against a newborn’s biological and emotional needs.

So, When Should You Think About Sleep Changes?

The question of “when” is as personal as the “what.” Generally, after the 4th trimester, as your baby’s circadian rhythm begins to mature (around 4 – 6 months), you might start to see opportunities for more structured routines.

But the real answer is: when sleep – or the lack thereof – is no longer working for your family.

This could look like:

  • A baby who has trouble falling asleep without being rocked for 30+ minutes.
  • A toddler who is still waking multiple times a night, leaving everyone exhausted.
  • A child who was a great sleeper but has developed a strange, persistent 5:00 AM waking habit for months that you can’t shake.

It’s this last point – the specific, stubborn sleep issue – where our unique Sleep Mini-Session truly shines.

The Power of a Targeted Mini-Session

You don’t always need a full, comprehensive sleep package. Sometimes, you just need an expert to look at one specific problem and give you an honest, actionable strategy.

Our 60-minute Sleep Mini-Session is perfect for you if:

  • You’ve already done the hard work of sleep training, but one weird issue (like early waking) has crept in.
  • You need to “reshape” a few habits, like a prolonged bedtime routine or night weaning.
  • You want a professional opinion on a single, specific sleep challenge.
  • You want a newborn sleep education (0-3 months old) to understand the current situation and want some improvement.

We’ll dive deep into your situation and give you our best, honest recommendation for the next steps. No fluff, no pressure to buy a bigger package – just focused, expert advice.

A Truly Holistic Approach: Combining Sleep Support with Craniosacral Therapy

Sometimes, sleep disruptions have a physical component, especially in little ones who have experienced a stressful birth or have tension in their tiny bodies. This is why we offer a powerful, integrated option.

You can book your Sleep Mini-Session alongside an in-person Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) wellness check with Angela.

Imagine this:

  • Angela performs a gentle craniosacral session with your baby or child, helping to release any physical tensions and promote deep nervous system relaxation.
  • Then after, we sit down for your Sleep Mini-Session, where we can discuss sleep strategies while your child is in a calm, regulated state.

This combination allows us to address the issue from both a physiological and a behavioural perspective. We can talk about the profound benefits of CST – how it can ease birth trauma, support digestion, and promote a state of calm that is so conducive to sleep – and then build a sleep plan that complements that newfound peace.

Ready to find your family’s path to better sleep?

You don’t have to follow a generic rulebook. You just need the right guide for your journey.
