Sleep Isn’t a Luxury – It’s a Building Block

Hey there, friends! So, as a pediatric sleep consultant, you can probably guess where I stand on the whole “Is sleep important?” question. (Spoiler alert: I’m a huge fan.)

But sometimes I wonder – is my passion for sleep making me see things? Or is the science really that solid?

I’m so glad you (virtually) asked!

First, let me say this loud and clear: I am a huge believer in the power of a healthy, yummy, varied diet for our kids. It’s absolutely essential. But if nutrition is the cornerstone of their health, then sleep is the sturdy foundation right underneath it. They work together, and you can’t have a strong house without both.

You’ve probably heard about the growing concerns around childhood health. And it turns out, sleep plays a starring role in one of the biggest challenges we face. Studies – like a big one from the NIH – have shown that toddlers and babies who don’t clock enough sleep are significantly more likely to struggle with weight down the road. Why? Because sleep helps balance the very hormones that tell us we’re hungry or full. When sleep is short, those signals get fuzzy, and it sets the stage for a tougher relationship with food later on.

But here’s the thing I’m truly passionate about: sleep is so much more than just preventing future problems. It’s about today.

  • It’s brain food: While your little one is snoozing, their busy brain is sorting, filing, and making sense of everything they learned that day – from new words to how to stack a block.
  • It’s mood magic: Ever notice how everything feels like a crisis when you’re tired? It’s the same for our kids. Good sleep is their best defense against meltdowns and their biggest boost for resilience.
  • It’s an immune system booster: Think of sleep as their nightly tune-up, helping to repair and defend their body so they can fight off those preschool plagues.

This is why my heart does a little sigh when I hear well-intentioned advice like, “Oh, babies just sleep when they need to,” or “Don’t worry about a schedule, just follow their lead.”

I get the sentiment! It’s meant to be reassuring. But we’d never say that about food, right? Imagine someone telling you, “Kids know what’s healthy – just put out candy and broccoli and let them choose!” or “They’ll eat when they’re hungry; no need for mealtimes!” We’d smile politely and walk away because we know our job is to guide them toward healthy habits.

Sleep is the same. It’s a skill, and we are our children’s gentle guides in learning it.

By protecting their sleep, we’re not just grabbing a quiet moment for ourselves (though, hello, that’s a wonderful bonus!). We’re actively giving them a tool for a happier, healthier, more focused life. We’re building a foundation for their well-being that lasts long after the last lullaby is sung.

So, yes, I’m passionate about sleep. Because when you look at the science and see the smiles on well-rested little faces, it’s hard not to be.

Is your “foundation” feeling a little shaky?
